Salt Dough Ornaments

Salt Dough Ornaments are a great project for all ages. You can use cookie cutters to make traditional Christmas designs, or make hand or paw prints for posterity.

What you need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup table salt
1 cup water
Glitter, paint, and ribbon for decoration
Polyurethane spray, optional

Instructions:

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Slowly pour in the water until mixture starts to hold together, then finish mixing together by hand. Knead the dough until soft, about five minutes and then let rest for 20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. On lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/8-inch thickness.

Cut out shapes using Christmas cookie cutters and arrange on a baking sheet.

Using a straw or toothpick, poke a hole big enough for a ribbon or an ornament hanger (paper clips work great). Bake for 2 hours, or until hard. After the ornaments have cooled, decorate using paint and glitter. If you’d like, you can spray both sides of the ornaments with a light coat of polyurethane to help preserve them. Add ribbon or an ornament hanger and hang on your tree or give away as gifts.
